  17. Congratulations to the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation 
  18. (AMSAT), which celebrates its 25th anniversary on March 3.
  19.  
  20. In early January 1969 a small group of interested amateurs 
  21. began meeting in the Washington, D.C. area, with the idea 
  22. of forming an East Coast group to carry on the objectives 
  23. of Project OSCAR (Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur 
  24. Radio).
  25.  
  26. They decided to form a non-profit corporation to 
  27. disassociate the group's activities from any of the 
  28. companies with whom the members were employed, which 
  29. included IBM, the Applied Physics Lab of The Johns Hopkins 
  30. University, and the National Aeronautics and Space 
  31. Administration (NASA).

  33. Nearly two dozen interested amateurs attended the first 
  34. general organizational meeting, held on February 6, 1969.
  35.  
  36. Just two months later, on March 3, 1969, AMSAT was 
  37. incorporated in the District of Columbia.  The first 
  38. public announcements appeared in April QST and in 
  39. Autocall, a Washington, D.C.-area clubs publication.

  41. Among AMSAT's founders (and members of the first board of 
  42. directors) were George Jacobs, W3ASK; Perry Klein, W3PK; 
  43. Jan King, W3GEY; and Bill Tynan, W3XO.
  44.  
  45. Today, AMSAT supports both amateur satellites and the 
  46. SAREX (Shuttle Amateur Radio Experiment) program.
